For school, the month of January was all about snow, winter weather, and the Arctic (including polar bears and penguins). Here is a look at some of the many things we did.
Snowflake making out of coffee filters.
(Breeley with scissors is kinda scary...)
We also made snowman painting with "puffy paint" made out of shaving cream and glue.
We read lots of books about polar bears and penguins. We also watched Happy Feet and a bunch of YouTube videos. Alyse wrote out lots of facts in a little notebook also. Plus we did some crafts.
Polar bear painting.
And here is a polar bear mask.
There were more crafts (including the penguins below) and we used our winter words as much as possible in writing.
For science we talked a lot about weather.
We froze water to make it into ice.
We also made water into rain and talked about the water cycle.
(This experiment was about when water gets hot it turns to steam. Also we talked about how water goes from a body of water and evaporates into the air making clouds. When the clouds are full it rains or if it is cold it snows. If you look on the plate it actually started to drip and made "rain drops")
Here Alyse melted ice with salt.
Alyse really liked making snowflakes (and some sparkly hearts) out of Borax and boiling water.
There was also our trip to the mountains which connected in with playing in the snow.
January was a great start of school in 2013.
