Beach Week Rewind

In September we went on our annual beach trip.
It was a great week away with lots of relaxing and playing.
I didn't get to spend as much time as I usually do out on the sand because I was with a little baby, but I always love our beach trip.  Cammie loved walking on the porch and hearing the waves.
There are lots of fun traditions (crab hunting, finding treasure...)
There was no annual family picture, but here are some pictures of our week at the beach.

Apple Pickin'

One of my favorite fall trips that we take is to the apple orchard.
We love Sky Top.
It is about an hour and a half away from us.  It's in the mountains and is beautiful!
Plus, the donuts are so yummy!
This year, my parents drove us up there for an afternoon of fun.

Snow Day In the Mountains

This year (so far) we have not had any snow here in Charlotte.  Sad!  Josh and I had been talking about taking the girls to the mountains to play in the snow.  So when a few weekends ago we had a Saturday off of our regular routine, we decided to take a very spontaneous trip to the mountains.

A friend of mine had already done some research and found a free sledding hill in Beech Mountain.  I knew that I was not going to be able to sled with the girls and Josh was going to have to do the walking and sledding by himself with both girls so we wanted something kinda small and easy.  So that is where we decided to head off to.

I went through our snow stuff, which we didn't have very much of and packed us up for a day in the snow.  (It was kinda ironic because I had just ordered new scarves, gloves, hats, a snowsuit for Breeley, etc but none of them had come in.  They arrived at our house 2 days after our trip.)

First we drove the 3.5hrs and went sledding.

Alyse really liked it.

After awhile we done and decided to head to Boone.

We went to the Daniel Boone Inn to eat dinner.
The next week Alyse and I did a lesson on who Daniel Boone was to make a school connection.  We have also been talking about snow so I kinda consider this a field trip. :)

We were home by 8:30pm.
It was a fabulous day trip.
So glad we went.

Apples for School

Our theme for September for school was Apples.

We read some books about apples and also had some apple fun.

We made some homemade apple play dough.

Apple Pie Scented Playdough

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1 Tablespoon cream of tartar
1 cup water
Red food coloring
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground allspice

Stir ingredients together well in pot. Over medium heat cook the dough, stirring constantly until it forms a ball. Turn dough onto a cutting board and knead until very smooth. Cool. Store in a covered plastic container.

We also had an apple craft day at our house.

I made some "apple" oreos for us to snack on.
(Our friends also brought some apple cider and homemade apple sauce.)

We made 2 kinds of apple trees.
Lots of kids, lots of fun.

We also planned a trip to an apple orchard.
Unfortunately the day we arranged for our trip was the day of my Grandpa's funeral.  Since I was going to be out of town, our friends very kindly let us reschedule our trip.
We went last week and had lots of fun.
We heard a story about Johnny Appleseed.

Then we were went on a hay ride.

We made a scarecrow.

And ate some yummy apple doughnuts and drank apple cider.

Then we got a bag of apples to take home.

We have also watched the Johnny Appleseed movie on youtube.

And learned the Johnny Appleseed song/prayer.

Oh, the Lord's been good to me.
And so I thank the Lord.
For giving me the things I need.
The sun and the rain and the apple seed.
The Lords been good to me.
Amen.
